Common Balto-Slavic, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *būtēy; present tense forms are from Proto-Indo-European *h₁es- (to be), suppletive stem forms derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuh₂- (to become). Compare identical situation in Old Church Slavonic бъіти (byti).
