defective verb ({{{1}}})
  1. (grammar) A verb that can only be conjugated in certain persons and numbers, i.e., it lacks a word in the normally expected conjugation, and may be replaced by the phenomenon of suppletion. The verb go is the paradigmatic English defective verb; it lacks a regular past tense and instead has the suppletive went, which is in fact the archaic past of the verb wend (to wander, wind, twine, even be a vine, as in wine); "wended" is its modern past tense.
