From Proto-Germanic *naht-, from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts. Cogante with Old High German naht. (German Nacht), Old Norse nátt (Icelandic nótt), Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌷𐍄𐍃 (nahts); and with Ancient Greek νύξ (nyx), Latin nox, Common Slavic *noktь (Russian ночь (noč’)).
