Old French esmai, from esmaier ‘to trouble’, from Vulgar [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:fr:Template:lang:la derivations]] *exmagare ‘make someone lost, bewitch’, from Latin ex- + a second element representing either Latin magus ‘sorceror’ or Germanic *magan ‘power’ ( > English may).
