Proto-Germanic *jūŋgaz, contracted from *juwuŋgaz, from Proto-Indo-European *juwn̥kós. Cognate with Old Frisian jung, Old Saxon jung (Dutch jong), Old High German junc (German jung), Old Norse ungr (Swedish ung), Gothic 𐌾𐌿𐌲𐌲𐍃; and with Latin juvencus (young bull), Old Irish oac (young).
