Etymology

From Common Slavonic брѣгъ from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ (height). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *bergoz (English barrow, German Berg), Old Irish brigh (mountain), Armenian բարձր (bardzr), high).

N.B.— The irregular plural берега is actually an old dual form, since rivers have two of them.
