Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *vьrxъ (whence also OCS врьхъ (vrĭxŭ)), from Proto-Indo-European *wers-.
Balto-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian viršus and Latvian virsus. Other Indo-European cognates include Latin verruca (“‘a steep place, height’”), Ancient Greek ἕρμα (hérma), “‘reef, rock, hill’”).
