From Middle Persian diz, from Old Persian didā, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeiǵʰ- (to smear, plaster; to form, knead). Cognate with Latin fingō, Ancient Greek τεῖχος (teikhos) and Sanskrit देग्धि (degdhi).
