Japanese

Etymology

Historically was /hoto2/. /to2/ may be related to /to1/ (place, location); however, the phonological difference can not be explained.

Pronunciation

Historically /h/ underwent a number of phonological changes. Between the 9th and 17th century, /h/ was realized as IPA: [ɸ]. Following that it gradually became IPA: [h] as it is today, with the exception of /hu/ IPA: ɸu still remaining. Sometime before the 9th century, exact date unknown, /h/ was realized as IPA: [p]. This pronunciation still remains in some Okinawa dialects.

/to1/ and /to2/ merged into IPA: to by the 9th century.
