Etymology

From Middle Korean 가ᄅᆞ (kalo, "strand, part") + the passivizing suffix -디다 (-tita). First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as 갈아디다 (Yale: kal.atita).
