Suffix

-heit

  1. Converts an adjective into a noun and usually denotes an abstract quality of the adjectival root. -heit is used only with adjectives not ending in -ig, -ich, -sam, or -bar (these must be used with the suffix -keit). It is often equivalent to the English suffix -ness but is cognate with the English suffix -hood, e.g. Childhood → Kindheit
    The woman is beautiful. → Die Frau ist schön.
    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. → Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters.
