Originally named Antlia pneumatica (air pump) in the 18th century by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. From [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:Template:lang:la derivations]] antlia a pump for drawing water; Ancient Greek ἀντλία (antlia), bilge water).
