Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *kes- (to comb, scratch). Derksen argues that the second sense of scythe is etymologically identical with the first one, and not derived from PIE *ḱos-.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian kasa (braid) and Old Prussian kexti (braided hair).
