From Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr. Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀔𐀳𐀩 (ma-te-re) (Modern Greek μητέρα (mētéra)), German Mutter, Latin mater, Persian مادر (mādar), and Sanskrit मातृ (mātṛ).
