Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Compound of *pa- + *ǫkъ (“‘hook’”) (whence Common Slavic *ǫkotь) < Proto-Indo-European *h₂enkos (hook). The spider was thus named after the shape of its legs. Indo-European cognates include Latin uncus, Ancient Greek ὄγκος (ónkos) and Sanskrit अङ्क (aṅká).
