Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeymeh₂ - there were also root variants *ǵʰyem- and *ǵʰim-. Cognate with Lithuanian žiema, Latvian ziema, Latin hiems, Sanskrit हिम (himá), Ancient Greek χεῖμα (kheȋma), Hittite 𒄀𒈠𒀭 (giman).
