Named by Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman between 1595 and 1597. From [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:Template:lang:la derivations]] grūs, a "crane" (bird), originally from Proto-Indo-European *gerə- (to cry hoarsely).
