1538, from Mediaeval Latin Russi (“‘Russians’”) < Old East Slavic Русь (“‘Rus’”). The name comes from a group of warrior merchants from Sweden who settled around Kiev and the Dnieper river in the ninth century, and established the Rus principalities.
