Why this policy? Most people bothering to wikify/dewikify languages are currently acting intuitively. While this is great in a small community with few major contributors, we can’t expect this growing project to have a shared intuition.
List of languages NOT to be wikified
The following languages are believed to be anything better than obscure or unknown, and they deserve dewikification. Rule of thumb applied is the correspondence between the names of countries and languages, with no potential for confusion. (Note that there are limitations to this rule: Tswana and Sesotho correspond to their countries Botswana and Lesotho but it is reasonable to wikilink them.)
Languages in the grey area
These languages probably should also not be linked, as commonly known or also qualifying as above. (This list probably needs a number of additions.)
Languages listed above this rule are automatically unlinked.
Languages listed below this rule are always linked, and will be automatically wikilinked by 'bot. Languages with code templates do not need to be listed. (But it is harmless.) See Dictionary:Index to templates/languages for the languages with templates.
Preliminary list, feel free to add. (User:AutoFormat is using this list) Languages should be linked in this list so we can see any missing language name entries.
