Via English algorithm from Middle Latin algorismus, a transliteration of Arabic al-Khowarizmi ("the man from Khowarizm"), surname of the well-known Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī who lived during the ninth century and introduced sophisticated mathematics to the West (particularly algebra). Was also influenced by Greek arithmos (number) due to a later mistaken connection.
