Etymology

From Germanic *aitra-, from Indo-European *oid- ‘to swell’. Cognate with Old Saxon ettor, Old High German eitar (German Eiter ‘pus’), Old Norse eitr (Swedish etter). The IE root was also the source of Greek οἶδος ‘swelling’, Slavic jadъ (Russian яд ‘poson’).
