Etymology

From Middle English cardinal (important, chief) < [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:Template:lang:la derivations]] cardinalis (pertaining to a hinge, hence applied to that on which something turns or depends, important, principal, chief) < cardo (hinge) + -alis (adjectival suffix).
