From Old Irish cride, whence also Irish croí. Related to Welsh craidd, Breton kreis (“‘middle’”), from Proto-Celtic *krdjo-n. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr, whence also Ancient Greek καρδία; Latin cor, (gen. cordis): Italian cuore; English heart, German Herz; Lithuanian širdis.
