From Proto-Germanic *ahto from Proto-Indo-European *oktō(u)- (eight). Cognate with Old High German ahto (German acht), Old Saxon ahto (Dutch acht), Old Norse átta (Swedish åtta), Gothic 𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌰𐌿; and, outside the Germanic languages, with Sanskrit अष्ट (aṣṭa), Ancient Greek ὀκτώ (oktō), Latin octo, Albanian tetë, Old Irish ocht (Irish hocht), Old Slavic osm’ (Russian восемь (vósem’)).
