From Proto-Germanic *hugjan (think, consider). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽, Old Norse huga (Icelandic hugsa ‘to think’). Related to Middle Scots huik ‘regard, consider’.
