From the root Proto-Germanic *līka-, *līkam, from the root Proto-Indo-European *līg-. Cognate with the Old Saxon līk (Dutch lijk), Old High German līh (German Leiche), Old Norse lík (Swedish lik), Gothic 𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺 (leik).
