From Proto-Indo-European *wĺ̥kʷos (wolf). Cognate with Sanskrit वृक (vṛ́ka), Ancient Greek λύκος (lukos), Lithuanian vilkas. Possibly a borrowing from Osco-Umbrian where PIE *kʷ regularly gave /p/, or metathesis occurred because of a wolf taboo.
