Etymology

Old English mealt, malt. Cognate with Dutch mout, German Malz, Swedish malt. From Proto-Germanic *malta(OE mealt, ON malt, OHG malz), originally from Proto-Slavic *malta (cf. Ukr. mólot, Cz. mláto.
