From French (essence de) pétrole, from Mediaeval Latin petroleum, from Greek πετρέλαιον (petrelaion) "oil of the rock", from Ancient Greek πέτρα (petra) "stone, rock" + έλαιον (elaion) "olive oil, any oily substance".
