Finnish

(index py)

Etymology

  • Possibly derived from the noun pyy, "hazel grouse", — therefore, originally may have meant "to hunt a hazel grouse", from which the usage has probably extended to other types of hunting and then to demanding and asking.
Usage notes:
The conjugation depends on the meaning. When using the verb in the original sense (to hunt/fish), use the latter conjugation with the imperfect ending -ti/-di and when using in the sense "to ask for", use the former conjugation with the imperfect ending -si.
