rakentaa

Definition from Dictionary, a free dictionary
Happiness radiates like the fragrance from a flower, and draws all good things toward you. Allow your love to nourish yourself as well as others. Do not strain after the needs of life. It is sufficient to be quietly alert and aware of them. In this way life proceeds more naturally and effortlessly. Life is here to Enjoy!

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *rakke. Cognates include Hungarian rak.

Verb

rakentaa (stem raken-*)

  1. (transitive) To build, construct.
    Aavikolle rakennettiin kokonainen suurkaupunki.
An entire metropolis was built in the desert.

Usage notes

  • Rakentaa is one of the Finnish verbs that, unlike their equivalents in most Indo-European languages, require a lative case, i.e. require the question "where ... to?" instead of "where?". Thus, "Aavikolle rakennettiin kokonainen suurkaupunki" means literally 'An entire metropolis was built to the desert'. Similar verbs are e.g. eksyä, eksyttää, hukkua, hukata, hukuttaa, kadota, kadottaa, hävitä, hävittää, saapua, jäädä and jättää. See also the verbs etsiä, löytää, löytyä, lukea and kuulla which require the question "where ... from?" instead of "where?" (Nähdä can be both a verb with an essive case ("where?") and a verb requiring the question "where ... from?".)
