From Old French rivière < Vulgar Latin *riparia (riverbank, seashore, river) < [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:Template:lang:la derivations]] riparius (of a riverbank) < riparia (shore) < ripa (river bank) < Proto-Indo-European *rei- (to scratch, tear, cut).
