Etymology

From Old Norse samr (masc.), söm (fem.), samt (neut.), from Proto-Germanic *sama, from Proto-Indo-European *somo-. Compare Swedish samma, Danish samme, Gothic sama, a weak adjectival form, Sanskrit सम (sama); and Ancient Greek ὁμός, Old Irish som.
