Representing the Indo-European demonstrative pronoun *siā, *sā, adapted in West Germanic as the definite article by analogy with the t- stem forms (Old English þæt). Cognate with Old Norse , Gothic 𐍃𐍉, Greek . See also the masculine forms under se.
