Uncertain; possibly a derivative of owt or nowt.

Usage notes

This word is generally exclusive to Galashiels and Kelso, with people from the likes of Hawick and Jedburgh preferring summin instead (or sometimes suhin, which has only been around since the 1980s and is probably a derivative of the somewhat older nuhin)
