Etymology

From  (て, te) + (o; a grammatical marker following the direct object) + 切る (きる, kiru). Literally meaning "to cut hands".

te o kiru (kanji 手を切る, hiragana てをきる)

  1. (idiomatic) to cut off a relationship, to break up with someone, to be through with someone
    私はあの男とは手を切った
    わたしはあのおとことはてをきった
    Watashi wa ano otoko to wa te o kitta.
