English

Etymology

From Middle English hwippen or whippen. Middle low German and Middle Dutch wippen (to move quickly), Possibly from a Proto-Germanic *wip, although such word has not yet been found written. Perhaps also from [[w:Template:lang:la language|Template:lang:la]][[Category:Template:lang:la derivations]] vibare (to shake), akin to the Sanskrit root  (vep). (See Swedish vippa and Danish vippe (to shake)).
